Inside VOCAL: The Culture That Powers BMW TechWorks India

At BMW TechWorks India, culture is not defined by statements on a wall. It is reflected in how we build, how we challenge each other, and how we show up for the work every day.
We call this culture VOCAL – Vibrant, Open, Collaborative, Agile, and Lean. Five principles that shape how our teams across Pune, Bengaluru, and Chennai approach complex engineering challenges, build digital solutions, and grow together.
“VOCAL reflects the kind of environment we are committed to building – one where people feel empowered to speak up, take ownership, and grow. When individuals thrive, teams perform better, and innovation follows. That is what makes BMW TechWorks India a place where talent can truly build a meaningful career. “ - Aditya Khera CEO, BMW TechWorks India
As a joint venture between BMW Group and Tata Technologies, BMW TechWorks India is a strategic engineering hub contributing to digital vehicle technologies, enterprise platforms, and next-generation mobility solutions for the BMW Group. The work carries the weight of a storied engineering legacy, and VOCAL is the shared mindset that helps our teams deliver on it, a common language, a unified purpose, and a culture where ideas move faster and ownership is shared.
Vibrant
A vibrant culture is one where curiosity has somewhere to go.
At BMW TechWorks India, vibrancy shows up in how our engineering teams engage with real, production-grade problems. Hackathons such as MEDHA-V, our global AI data visualisation challenge spanning six BMW tech hubs, and our internal innovation sprints give engineers space to step beyond regular development cycles and prototype what’s next, grounded in the systems we build, the platforms we run, and the vehicles we help bring to life.
Vibrancy here is curiosity with a purpose, not novelty for its own sake.
Open
Good engineering lives or dies by honest conversation.
Our Open principle is a commitment to transparency in how we communicate and how we build. Code reviews, cross-team technical discussions, and open forums make sure the best idea wins, regardless of who brought it. Early-career engineers and senior leaders challenge each other with courage and respect, and no contribution is too small to surface.
What emerges is a culture of psychological safety, one where people speak up, assumptions get tested, and problems get solved faster because nothing stays hidden for long.
Collaborative
No meaningful engineering happens in isolation.
BMW TechWorks India works shoulder-to-shoulder with BMW Group in Munich and with tech hubs across South Africa, Portugal, China, Romania and beyond. We contribute to global vehicle programmes, digital platforms, and enterprise solutions that power the BMW ecosystem, and the quality of that work depends on how well we collaborate, inside our hubs and across continents.
We thrive in teams where diverse perspectives and deep technical expertise meet on a shared problem. Progress, at BMW TechWorks India, is always a collective effort.
Agile
The automotive industry is going through one of its deepest transformations, software-defined vehicles, advanced E/E architectures, and AI woven into every layer of the stack.
In this environment, agility is less about how we run our development cycles and more about how quickly we recognise, absorb, and apply new technology, especially AI, to the way we engineer.
Our teams are pivoting from the incremental gains of traditional development to the exponential productivity that AI-led engineering makes possible. We adopt new tools, frameworks, and approaches the moment they create real value, and we adapt to technology shifts without compromising the reliability expected of a global automotive leader. Engineers here work on industry-leading tech stacks with hands-on learning opportunities that sharpen both domain depth and technical range.
Agile, for us, is how we stay ahead of change while holding the line on engineering standards.
Lean
Lean, at BMW TechWorks India, is the discipline of clarity over chaos.
It means focusing effort where it creates value. Our teams continuously re-examine processes, simplify workflows, and make sure every hour of engineering contributes to outcomes that matter, to the code we ship, the systems we harden, and the platforms we scale.
Lean is how we protect our engineers’ time and attention for the work only they can do.
More than a framework, VOCAL is how we work. What holds it together is simpler: the people, and the workplace we build around them.
Trust, fairness, and respect are the defaults here, not the exceptions.
Our hub is a home to people with very different backgrounds, paths, and perspectives, and we have found that the best engineering happens when those differences are welcomed rather than smoothed over. Every voice is heard. Every contribution is seen. The connections you build at BMW TechWorks India are real, and they tend to outlast any single project.
It is why new joiners often find themselves both challenged and supported in the same week. It is why careers get built here, not just started.
“VOCAL reflects the kind of environment we are committed to building – one where people feel empowered to speak up, take ownership, and grow. When individuals thrive, teams perform better, and innovation follows.
